The following is a list of factory recommended service intervals and related information pertaining to 1999-2004 WJ models (USA). Capacities, service intervals and part numbers may vary slightly among some of the different WJ models. Differences will be noted as the information becomes available. Before performing any service, check your vehicle owners manual for verification of intervals, capacities and other recommendations and cautions.

WARNING: You can be badly injured working on or around a motor vehicle. Do only that service work for which you have the proper equipment. If you have any doubt about your ability to perform a service job, take your vehicle to a competent mechanic.

Service Interval "A"
Service Interval 'A' is for vehicles that are not operated under any of the conditions listed under Schedule 'B'. Most vehicles are operated under the conditions listed for Schedule 'B'. Use the schedule that best describes your driving conditions. Where time and mileage are listed, follow the interval that occurs first.

Service Interval B
Follow this schedule if you usually operate your vehicle under one or more of the following conditions:

  • Day or night temperatures are below 0°C (32°F)
  • Stop and go driving
  • Excessive engine idling
  • Driving in dusty conditions
  • Short trips of less than 16.2 km (10 miles)
  • More than 50% of your driving is at sustained high speeds during hot weather, above 32°C (90°F)
  • Trailer towing
  • Taxi, police, or delivery service (commercial service)
  • Off-road or desert driving
  • If equipped for and operated with E-85 (ethanol) fuel.

Transfer cases
(4WD Grand Cherokees only)

Grand Cherokee WJ's use three different 4-wheel drive transfer cases, identified on the interior shift console. A circular ID tag is attached to the rear of each transfer case. The ID tag provides the transfer case model number, assembly number, gear ratio and location of manufacture. The transfer case serial number also represents the date of build. FLUID CAUTION:
  • ATF+4® MUST always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4®.
  • ATF+4® is compatible with ATF+3 and can be used to top off vehicles that currently have ATF+2 or ATF+3.
  • DO NOT use ATF+2 or ATF+3 to top off vehicles that have ATF+4® fluid
FLUID ADDITIVES:

DaimlerChrysler strongly recommends against the addition of any fluids to the transmission, other than those automatic transmission fluids listed above. Exceptions to this policy are the use of special dyes to aid in detecting fluid leaks. Various “special” additives and supplements exist that claim to improve shift feel and/or quality. These additives and others also claim to improve converter clutch operation and inhibit overheating, oxidation, varnish, and sludge. These claims have not been supported to the satisfaction of DaimlerChrysler and these additives must not be used. The use of transmission “sealers” should also be avoided, since they may adversely affect the integrity of transmission seals.

FILTER SEAL CAUTION (545RFE):

The primary oil filter seal MUST be fully installed flush against the oil pump body. DO NOT install the seal onto the filter neck and attempt to install the filter and seal as an assembly. Damage to the transmission will result. Install the new primary oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet bore. Seat the seal in the bore with the butt end of a hammer, or other suitable tool. Place replacement filter in position on valve body and into the oil pump. Install screw to hold filter to valve body. Tighten screw to 40 in. lbs. torque.

Mopar Antifreeze/Coolant

The recommended mixture is 50/50 ethylene-glycol and water. Never use pure antifreeze.

Only Mopar Antifreeze Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (glycol base coolant with corrosion inhibitors called HOAT) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% distilled water.

Note: Antifreeze mixture must always be at least 44%, all climates year round. Maximum protection (-90d) is provided with a 68% mixture protection.

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.
