Center dash bezels

center bezel

Shown above left is the original woodgrain lower center dash bezel used on the 1999-2001 upscale WJ's. At right, the new economy black bezel used on the 2002s. In addition to deleting the woodgrain, Chrysler also removed the cigarette lighter and the ashtray insert. The black bezel is more susceptible to mars and light scratches just from ordinary use. It is also easily scratched by fingernails. For the majority of 2002 owners that prefer the woodgrain version, the 2001 assembly is still available through authorized Jeep parts dealers and is very easy to change, although somewhat expensive. The bezel is sold as an entire assembly (with everything except the seat heater buttons). Click on photo to enlarge.

bezel removal

The bezel assembly is removed as shown in the diagram above. It is held in place by strong snap clips near each corner which can be gently pried out with a plastic putty knife. Tip: The bezel will come out much easier if you remove the plastic tray below it. Once you have the bezel out a few inches the wiring harnesses for the power outlets, ashtray light and heated seats can be unhooked and the bezel removed. The power seat heat buttons can be easily unscrewed from the back for installation into a new bezel. Click on photo to enlarge.

To re-install, align and slightly press in the lower snap clips first, and then align upper clips and gently push in each corner evenly and firmly.

lower center bezel, black

Shown above is the black lower center bezel, front and reverse (with power outlet and seat switches not installed). Note the location of the four snap clips on the back. Five wire harnesses attach to the bezel, one for each power outlet, one for each heated seat switch (if so equipped) and one for the ashtray light. Click on photo to enlarge.

ashtray mounted switches

Some owners have found unique uses for their center console ashtrays, including this clever installation featuring switches mounted for overhead Hela lights.

upper center bezel assembly

If you should ever need to remove the radio or air vents, the upper center bezel is fastened the same way as the lower bezel, with snap clips near each corner. See Audio Component Removal. Click on photo to enlarge.
